Sassicaia Tenuta San Guido was created with the intention of recreating a ''Bordolese'' wine in Maremma, a relatively unknown winemaking region. The decision to plant Cabernet at Tenuta San Guido was based on the similarities noted between this part of Tuscany and Graves, in Bordeaux. Graves means gravel, referring to the area's distinctive stony soil, just as Sassicaia, in Tuscany, refers to an area with the same characteristics. From 1948 to 1967, Sassicaia remained a strictly private affair, consumed only at the estate. Each year, a few cases were stored in the Castiglioncello cellar to age. The Marquis soon realized that the wine improved considerably with age. As often happens with great wines, what were once considered flaws eventually turned into virtues. Friends and relatives now encouraged Mario Incisa to further his experiments and perfect his revolutionary winemaking style for the area. The 1968 vintage was the first to be released, receiving a reception worthy of a Bordeaux Premier Cru. In the following years, the cellar was moved to temperature-controlled rooms, steel vats replaced wooden fermentation vats, and French barriques were introduced for aging.
