It owes much of its unmistakable flavor to the sea, which is an integral part of every vintage. During the summer, its rippled surface reflects like a mirror, doubling the sunlight. The refracted sunlight—pure, intense, and indirect—feeds the vines and softens the tannins, making them voluptuous, subtly nuanced, simply perfect. As the light falls on the vineyard, the sea generates another element. A light, moisture-laden wind breeze wafts through the vines and bunches of grapes. The cool air moderates the ripening process, prolongs the delicate evolution of a sustained and balanced acidity, refreshes the fruit in the drier months and driers it in the rainier months. Subsoil, there is a third element brought by the sea. The vine's roots burrow into a layer of blue clay, dating back a million years. On what was once a seabed, traces of a past life—minerals and fossils—are now found. Above, around, and below. The sea. Without it, Masseto could not exist.

What to pair wine with Masseto 2020

Masseto is perfect with fine cuts of meat, stews, braised dishes, roasts and game.

Contains sulfites.

It is produced with hand-harvested Merlot grapes in 15 kg crates, hand-selected on a double sorting table before and after destemming, and then soft-pressed. Six different lots are vinified separately. Fermentation takes place in both stainless steel and wooden tanks, followed by 15-20 days of maceration at a temperature between 25 and 30°C. Malolactic fermentation then begins in 100% new oak barrels, keeping the different lots separate for the first 12 months of maturation. The wine is then blended and returned to the barrels for another year, for a total of 24 months. Aged in bottle for another 12 months before release.
